Dictionary.com has declared 'maxxing' the Word of 2026. This is an abbreviation of 'maximising,' used either independently or added to other words to denote pushing an action or result to its maximum.

In August 2026, digital media used 'maxxing' nearly 19 times more frequently than the monthly average in 2025. Other contenders included 'affordability,' 'data centre,' 'odyssey,' and the abbreviated form of the word 'uncle'—'unc.'

Variations of the word are used in discussions about nutrition, sleep, and appearance: terms like 'proteinmaxxing' (maximising protein intake), 'fibermaxxing' (maximising fibre intake), 'sleepmaxxing' (maximising sleep improvement), and 'looksmaxxing' (maximising appearance improvement) have emerged.

Steve Johnson, Director of Lexicography at Dictionary Media Group, believes the term's spread reflects different reactions to the pursuit of constant self-improvement—from acceptance to irony and rejection of this race.
