The system, developed by BMW together with Swiss company Embotech, moves completed and in-production cars between production areas. The project began in 2022 at the plant in Dingolfing.

AFW operates only within production and logistics areas, not on public roads. The system detects people, forklifts and other vehicles nearby.

At BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, regular operation of the technology is scheduled to begin in 2027. It will become the company’s 5th facility where AFW is used.
