UK to Extend Permanent Residency Waiting Period for Most Migrants
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced plans to double the permanent residency (PR) waiting period for migrants earning less than £50,000 per year.

The UK plans to extend the permanent residency (PR) waiting period for most migrants from five to ten years. The reform was presented by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood. The changes are intended to be implemented in 2027.
Under the new rules, workers earning over £50,000 per year, as well as doctors, teachers, and nurses, will be able to apply for PR after five years. For those earning over £125,000, the waiting period will be reduced to three years.
Violators of immigration rules will have to wait at least 20 years, while some refugees arriving via illegal routes may face a waiting period of up to 30 years.
Those who have received welfare benefits will be required to live for five years without state assistance before submitting an application. The new rules have not yet taken effect.
